PHILIPPINE FOLKLORE
The Cute / Uniwork
This project, Creatures & Beasts of Philippine Folklore, aims to breathe new life into traditional Filipino mythical characters through the lens of playful, child-friendly design. Inspired by iconic styles such as Pokémon, Sanrio, and Mario Brothers, the illustrations transform figures like the Aswang, Kapre, and Manananggal into approachable and engaging characters. Traditionally depicted as frightening or menacing, these folklore creatures are reimagined with round shapes, soft textures, and vibrant colors, making them visually appealing for a younger audience while maintaining their cultural significance.
The project also explores how cuteness can be used as a design strategy to bridge the gap between traditional stories and modern sensibilities. By softening the fearsome traits of these creatures, the illustrations invite children to connect with Filipino folklore in a way that feels fun and engaging rather than intimidating. This approach not only makes the characters more accessible to younger generations but also preserves the essence of their stories and moral lessons, ensuring that this rich cultural heritage continues to resonate.
In addition to captivating younger viewers, the project appeals to adults through its nostalgic design elements, reminding them of the folklore they grew up with in a new and modern context. By combining the familiarity of Filipino mythology with contemporary, cute aesthetics, this project offers a fresh visual narrative that allows these legendary creatures to transcend generations and continue to be relevant and cherished in Filipino culture.
